Alexandra! Just found your Substack. I wrote about that today too. How the 13% turnout isn't the whole story, but just a move in a longer game

Really appreciate this detailed breakdown and one thing that stands out and worries me is how unusual it is to select Supreme Court justices through popular elections, effectively as political candidates. It seems like a gesture aimed at both the domestic audience and international partners. In a country like Mexico, where public trust in the state is still relatively low, I assume Ms. Sheinbaum is trying to signal that ordinary voters have a say even in shaping the judiciary.

But in countries with the highest levels of legal literacy, this approach is avoided for good reason. Most people aren’t in a position to judge who would make a good Supreme Court justice. Voters are also highly vulnerable to manipulative tactics, which may be accepted in politics but are clearly incompatible with justice. And given how socially and institutionally fragile the context remains in Mexico, this doesn't seem like the best direction.

Just my take, I don’t claim deep familiarity with Mexican internal politics.
