Claudia Sheinbaum's Presidency: Summary and Analysis of Day 26
Visit to Guerrero and update following Hurricane John, judicial branch elections, and continuing violence in Sinaloa...this is day 26 of Sheinbaum's presidency.
President Sheinbaum visited Acapulco, Guerrero today, officially terminating the state of emergency imposed by Hurricane John which occurred at the end of last month. She announced that over $350 million USD has been invested in the state following the hurricane, with nearly half of that investment coming in the form of direct subsidies for affected families. An additional $5 million USD has been allocated to Oaxacan municipalities affected by the storm. The president struck a positive tone, stating that the first phase of recovery is complete (debris removal, road repair, electricity restoration) and the second phase, “Acapulco se transforma contigo,” has already begun and will entail the rebuilding of homes and businesses affected by the storm.
Starting tomorrow, Mexico’s Supreme Court will host a series of private sessions to appoint a committee to determine which candidates will be named for the upcoming judicial branch elections. This committee will consist of five individuals, who will act on behalf of the Judicial Branch of the Federation.
Authorities in Sinaloa estimate that there were 14 homicides yesterday, the majority of which were in Culiacán. According to official reports, human remains were found in parts of the city with symbols and emblems referring to the warring organized crime groups. Reuters reports that between September 9th and October 18th, more than 172 people have been killed and another 200 reported missing.
