Claudia Sheinbaum's Presidency: Summary and Analysis of Day 24
Visit to Baja California Sur, updates on the violence in Guerrero and Guanajuato, Emilio Azcárraga steps down amid investigation...this is day 24 of Sheinbaum's presidency.
President Sheinbaum did today’s mañanera from Baja California Sur and began the press conference with the state’s governor who provided more details about the government’s new housing program. Much of the press conference was dedicated to Baja-specific updates regarding the new housing program and associated loans.
Omar García Harfuch, joined the mañanera and offered an update on yesterday’s violence. In Tecpan de Galeana, Guerrero, 17 people were killed (including two police officers), four people injured, and 11 arrested. The FGR is analyzing the materials used in the bombing attacks in Guanajuato yesterday. President Sheinbaum denied that the car bombs were acts of “terrorism,” García Harfuch followed up on the comment stating that the violence was the result of a dispute between two criminal groups. According to statistics gathered by the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), 33 deaths have been recorded thus far in the month of October resulting from Army operations in Sinaloa and Guerrero.
The Mexican Senate voted unanimously to approve a constitutional reform that would enshrine gender equality, close the wage gap, and put an end to gender-based violence. The Senate also passed a proposal that would make the constitutional reforms “unchallengeable.” This comes after AMLO pushed through several key constitutional reforms during his administration, most recently and perhaps most notably, the judicial reform.
Emilio Azcárraga, the president of Mexico’s largest television network, Grupo Televisa, has taken a leave of absence following a US Department of Justice investigation regarding an alleged bribery scheme of FIFA. The investigation centers on claims that one of Grupo Televisa’s units bribed various FIF officials to secure the rights to certain World Cup matches.
